Aim: To learn how the technology of production lines has influenced mass production.
You will need:
ingredients, utensils and packaging to make x number of sandwiches
a kitchen that will fit the whole class
timer
data recording sheet (you could record on a whiteboard)
group evaluation sheet (link provided below)
What to do:
In pairs, students will make a sandwich using 5 different ingredients following a detailed recipe that includes packaging. Keep all of the ingredients/utensils and materials at the front of the kitchen and have students come out the front to collect individual items in order to follow the recipe exactly.
Time how long it takes to make x number of sandwiches.
Then, set up the classroom as a production line. Create stations for each ingredient (again, following the recipe exactly) and have students acting as 'conveyer belts', packers etc. Make the same number of sandwiches again and time how long it takes.
Compare the results.
In groups students discuss and complete the Evaluation Sheet questions.
